At Which Level does it Use for?
This compilation of the most popular and highest rated Speak with Animals spells, compiled for use in Roll20. This Compendium will update to include all levels as they are released. However, It can be used at any level and has a lot of other spells as well.
For every slot level above 1st, you will affect an additional beast when you cast this spell in a spell slot of 2nd level or higher. I’ve seen the most common way of speaking as animals with Talk With Animals. Another thing to consider is how the creature would act or concentrate.
As soon as you pull animals with less intelligence, like bugs, you will elicit even stranger responses. Probably only the Queen and Hive would ask the Queen. The house fly lives so quickly that they develop bizarre religious beliefs based on garbage. Spiders and other predatory bugs would probably know their prey and immediate surroundings quite well but know little else.
It’s also important to remember that most animals won’t be happy to speak to a humanoid, even if they understand them. Humanoids are scary and carry frightening weapons. Other animals are captured and kept as slaves by humanoids. If given a really good reason to remain, most animals would likely run away unless they’re used to humanoids.
