Do you ever just sit and stare at something beautiful for a long time? Not because you’re in awe of it, but because you can’t believe that it exists? That’s how I feel about the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons. It’s so different from anything that came before it, yet somehow it still feels like D&D.
I’ve been playing it since the third edition was released, and I have to say that this new version is my favorite. Everything about it just sings to me. Maybe it’s the streamlined rules or the emphasis on storytelling over mechanics. Whatever it is, I’m hooked! Shape Change 5e is amazing, and you should check it out!

What if you could change the shape of your body at will? What would you become? In the 5th edition of the Shape Change spell, you can become almost any creature you can imagine. With this power, you can become a werewolf, a dragon, or anything in between. So what will you become?
The Duration is a special creature with the structure of a special creature. Any creature with your degree or lower Challenge Rating can become the new structure. There can be no Constructors or Undeads, and you must have thought about the type of creature at least once.
It seriously changes you into a common instance of that creature, excluding any category tiers or spellcasting traits. With this special characteristic, a creature can assume the appearance of a specific kind of creature (typically, a human creature has a template, it cannot change shape to take the form of that creature) while keeping most of its physical characteristics. Spells or abilities that reveal the creature’s natural form are true seeing spells.
When killed, a creature that uses a change shape will revert to its natural form, but separated body parts will retain their shape. A creature cannot use change shape to take the form of a creature with a template.
Can your shape change into a dragon?
There is no. 5e in 5e. Dragons aren’t permitted in Wild Shape. Polymorph allows high-level Wizards to turn into small dragons temporarily. Cael pointed out in the comments that the spell Shapechange can be used by 9th level druids/wizards to transform into dragons, albeit with some limitations.
What is a Shapechanger DND?
Shapeshifters have the supernatural ability to take on different forms. Shape shifting is possible in many magical effects, and not every creature that can change shapes possesses the shapechanger subtype.
What can you turn into with Shapechange 5e?
Shapechange can shape only creatures with a unique type. No turning into Slarkrethel the Kraken since that would make you a Kraken, but Imix, for instance, would be acceptable since he would be a Kraken by definition.
Is there a shapeshifting spell in DND?
During the Duration, you assume a different form. Any creature with a challenge rating equal to your level or lower can become your new form. You must have seen the creature at least once before, and it cannot be a Constructor an Undead.
